Overview

The Specialist Certificate in Coaching Psychology course is our introductory training program to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to apply Coaching Psychology techniques. Organisations have woken up to the fact that most employees need some additional perspective to help them be successful in their roles. Coaching as an intervention to address this has grown exponentially. Some pertinent questions remain, and need reflection: Why has coaching emerged now? Why is it seen to be so relevant? How can we tell when/if it works? Is it different from counselling and psychotherapy? Are certain types of coaching more effective, under certain conditions, with certain people?


Learning Outcome

  1. Develop an understanding of the coach-coachee relationship.
  2. Develop an understanding of a range of coaching psychology approaches, models and frameworks.
  3. Become knowledgeable of cognitive-behavioural, problem-solving, solution focused and rational emotive behavioural coaching.
  4. Understand the psychological concepts of emotional management, self-esteem, self-acceptance, self-motivation, focus on achieving goals, transformation of the coachee into the self-coach (the coaching career), low frustration tolerance and practice relevant skills that can be used in coaching.
  5. Learn how to deal with emotional interference when implementing and/or maintaining action plans.
  6. Consider the psychological coaching models and their application to life, business, executive, performance and speciality coaching.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for any applicant who is interested in the area of psychoanalytic therapy, individuals from diverse industries who wishes to learn more about psychology and mental health, existing professionals who wishes to have a structured review of this specific skills or aspiring private practitioners or any practitioners in the area of psychology, psychotherapy, counselling or coaching.

Requirements for enrollment

1. Diploma or equivalent (including English); or

2. NITEC or Higher NITEC (including English); or

3. Mature candidates (≥ 30 years old with min. 8 years work experience) or

4. Other private or foreign qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis

Topic 1: Introduction to Mental Health and Community Wellbeing
In this module we focus on the common mental health or community wellbeing issues that would benefit from positive psychology intervention and how to identify symptoms and behaviors.

Content covered: Introduction to mental health. Mood disorders. Personality disorders. Relationship issues. Career and professional issues. Personal performance issues.

Topic 2: Foundations of Coaching Psychology Practitioner
This module gives a broad critical and pragmatic evaluation of the field of coaching theory and practice. covers the definition of coach, distinctions between counseling, therapy, and coaching, the ethics of coaching, and a strong focus on the development of the basic coaching skills or core competencies, including butnot limited to creating rapport, reframing, open questions, and active listening.

Learning is developed both through readings, in class experiential and observational learning, reinforced through weekly Peer Coaching fieldwork.

Content covered: The shifts and shapes of the helping relationship and the human mind. Perspectives: the normative coach. Perspectives: the phenomenological coach. Perspectives: the critical coach. Perspectives: the postmodern coach. Focus on executives. Focus on careerFocus on mentoring and coaching as management style.

Topic 3: Organizational Behavior for Coaching
This course provides an overview and analysis of various behavioral concepts affecting human behaviour in business organisations, with emphasis on research, theory, and practice.This course provides an overview and analysis of various behavioral concepts affecting human behaviour in business organisations, with emphasis on research, theory, and practice.

Content covered: Introducing Organizational Behavior. Values, Personality and Individual Differences. MotivationRewards, Performance Management and How Groups Work. Teamwork, Team Performance, Power and Politics. Leadership Theories and Emerging Leadership Perspectives. Decision Making and Communication. Organizational Conflict, Negotiation, Culture and Development. Organization Goals, Structures, Strategic Capabilities and Design.

Topic 4: Social Psychology for Coaching
The course explores the relationship between the individual and the social environment, including the groups they belong to and the way they think about themselves and how they are influenced by others. The topics include self and others perception, attributions, prejudice, social identity, compliance and conformity, interpersonal and intergroup relations. Emphasis is on the application of social psychological concepts and theories to everyday events and encounters.

Content covered: Introduction to Social Psychology. Understanding the Self in Social World. Social Beliefs and Judgements. Relationship between Behaviour and Attitudes. Conformity and Obedience. Persuasion. Prejudice. Aggression. Interpersonal Attraction. Helping Behaviour.

Topic 5: Coaching as a Business
Introduces concepts of how to market your own coaching business, including identifying your business and your “ideal client” or niche, creating an elevator speech, and developing your marketing plan.

Content covered: Marketing Principles. Marketing Mix. SWOT Analysis. Service Management. Competitor Analysis. Marketing Strategies for Coaching Business.

Topic 6: Coaching Techniques and Approaches
The Coaching Techniques and Approaches course focuses on the skills used by professional coaches, covering the definition of coaching; the distinctions between counseling, therapy, and coaching; the ethics of coaching; and a strong focus on the development of the basic coaching skills or core competencies, including but not limited to creating rapport, reframing, open questions, and active listening, and goal setting.

Content covered: Fundamental coaching skills. Ethical and professional practice. Screening and orientation. Interventions for individuals. Interventions for businesses and organizations. Explain coaching processes to client. Providing coaching via distance technologies. Facilitate client development of decision making skills. Assist clients in their role transitions. Facilitate client use of resources in coaching (books, articles, skills, habits etc). Apply standards of practice of coaching. Promote awareness of coaching.

Topic 7: The Professional Coach
Focuses on life design and personal fulfillment. This is both a personal journey, with students using an assortment of common coaching assessments to advance their personal development, as well as being trained on how to use these with their clients. Some of the issues addressed include needs, values, beliefs; Life purpose; Life design; Integrity, standards, choices and boundaries; reserve and abundance; and self-care for coaches.

Content covered: Personal Goals. Personal Values. Personal Integrity and Ethics. Personal Choices and Boundaries. Personal Motivation. Personal Sources of Resources. Self-Care.


What this course is not

This course is not a substitute for postgraduate qualifications to be a professional counsellor or psychologist. You will need to reach out to your respective governing bodies to achieve that. In Singapore to be a professional counsellor or psychologist will require Masters degree and above, supervised practice of at least 600 (counsellor) hours or 1000 hours (for psychologist), and registration, licensing or chartership. Overseas, the requirements are more stringent and demanding. Please contact your local regulating bodies about this.



Duration of course

Total course duration is 24 hours and can be completed at the learner’s own pace, be it within a day or over several months. For busy adults, pre-recorded lectures are available; as such, the course can be attempted at the learner’s personal schedules.

For questions and guidance about the course content, our LMS system allows for learners to post their questions on the LMS learning wall, and a tutor will answer those queries to clarify the learner pointers.

How is this course delivered?

This course is delivered face-to-face (in person or via virtual environment) and supplemented via our e-learning portal, and through pre-recorded lectures for ease of accessibility.
